Manchester United are leading the race to sign Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria ahead of a number of their European rivals. Atletico Madrid, Dortmund and Liverpool have all shown interest in the player.

Gladbach have enjoyed a good Bundesliga season so far. They led the league for two months and currently find themselves just six points behind league leaders Bayern Munich. They are on course to secure a European place finish at the end of the season.

A large part of that success story this season is down to the form of Zakaria. He has been a dominant force in manager Marco Roses midfield. It seems as though his performances have not gone unnoticed as Sky Sport Deutschland states that the Red Devils are one of several sides chasing his signature.

Atlético Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool are all thought to have expressed an interest in the 23-year-old defensive midfielder, but it is Man Utd who are said to be leading the race. Former Liverpool winger Albert Riera has urged his old side to make a move for the highly rated midfielder. He believes Zakaria will complement the already formidable midfield combination at the club. The Reds have Fabinho and Naby Keita in the defensive midfield position. Reira believes Keita’s fitness issues should push Liverpool to make the move for the player.

United have been keeping an eye on his contract situation and are hoping to use that to their advantage. His current deal expires in the summer of 2022 and he is yet to agree to fresh terms, despite Gladbach pushing to get an extension over the line.

At the minute, Gladbach are on track to reach Europes top competition, so Eberl will be confident of convincing Zakaria to stay. But there are plenty of sides who can offer him Champions League football waiting to take him should Gladbach miss out.
